The huge response to last year’s blog ‘Wood for Your 5th Anniversary’ prompted some follow-up research into recent statistics on marriage and divorce rates in Australia and these show some interesting trends. Before you groan at the prospect of another glum report on the state of things, the news is actually good – The number of divorces has been steadily decreasing each year since 2002, while marriage remains the most popular partnership model for adult Australians. Of course these days things are not simple and relationships are more nuanced – couples who want to be married but can’t be, couples who don’t believe in the institution of marriage at all and many other permutations – but for the sake of simplicity and not muddying the waters we can say that Australians are still marrying by the thousands and most will celebrate a 5th anniversary.
