Why Huon Pine Makes a Beautiful Cheese and Bread Board

Huon pine is one of Tasmania’s most distinctive timbers: slow-growing, limited in supply, and prized for a colour, scent and feel unlike almost anything else in Australian woodwork.

A Distinctive Tasmanian Timber

Huon pine grows naturally only in Tasmania, mainly in the wet forests and river valleys of the west and south-west. It grows exceptionally slowly, and individual trees can live for more than 2,000 years.

Living trees are protected from commercial felling, so the timber available to woodworkers today comes largely from controlled salvage and historic stockpiles rather than newly cut forest.

The timber itself has a fine, even grain and natural oils that give it a smooth, almost buttery feel under the hand. Freshly worked Huon pine carries a faint resinous scent, while its colour moves from pale straw to warm golden yellow and deepens towards honey-gold with age.

These qualities explain why Huon pine has long been valued where appearance, workability and resistance to damp conditions all matter. On a serving board, the fine grain creates a clean, even surface, the natural oils help it cope with light moisture, and the warm colour provides an understated backdrop for bread, cheese and fruit.

Huon pine is softer than many dense hardwoods, so it is better suited to serving and light slicing than to forceful everyday chopping. Used that way, it will develop fewer deep cuts and retain more of the smooth surface that makes the timber so appealing.

Made from a Single Piece of Huon Pine

Huon Pine Cheese or Bread Board

Our Huon Pine Cheese or Bread Board is Australian made from a single solid piece of Tasmanian Huon pine. The shape is deliberately simple, allowing the grain, colour and natural character of the timber to remain the focus.

A cut-out handle makes it easy to carry straight to the table, and the board arrives pre-seasoned with a food-safe finish. It is ready for a loaf of bread, a wedge of cheese, sliced fruit or a shared platter.

Caring for Your Board

  • Wipe or hand wash it after use rather than soaking it or leaving it wet.
  • Never place it in the dishwasher.
  • Dry it promptly after cleaning.
  • Reapply a suitable food-safe board oil when the surface begins to look dry, following the care instructions supplied with the board.
  • Store it in a dry place away from direct heat and prolonged sunlight.

Cared for properly, a Huon pine board will develop the warmer colour and gentle marks of regular use rather than simply looking worn. Combined with its Australian craftsmanship and unusual Tasmanian timber, that makes it a thoughtful gift for a wedding, housewarming or birthday.
