Featured in Maison et Jardin Magazine – Issue 153
Our Fairy Wren Marquetry Artwork was featured in Issue 153 of Maison et Jardin Magazine, a leading French publication dedicated to interior and exterior decoration and lifestyle. The magazine is known as a must read for home decor enthusiasts, revealing and explaining the latest trends in design and art de vivre.
This issue showcased the work of marquetry artist Max Clerteau through our Fairy Wren Marquetry Artwork. The Fairy Wren is one of Australia’s most loved birds, and its delicate, lively nature is captured in this handcrafted piece. Using the traditional technique of marquetry, Max cuts each tiny piece of wood by hand, choosing colours and grains that bring depth and movement to the design. The individually cut pieces are then glued into place to form the complete image.
Marquetry requires patience and precision. A single artwork can take many hours to complete, using fret saws, scroll saws and scalpels to achieve the small and detailed shapes needed. This Fairy Wren piece uses both natural and dyed timbers. The background is Camphor Laurel, the hill is Sycamore and the outer frame border is Golden Sassafras. Additional fine details appear in both the bird and the frame corners. The artwork is professionally framed and supplied ready to hang, making it an elegant and nature inspired addition to any room.
Max studied marquetry in France, where the craft and its teaching guilds have a history that spans many centuries. Each artwork is signed and dated by the artist, adding authenticity and personal craftsmanship to the piece.
The inclusion of the Fairy Wren Marquetry Artwork in Maison et Jardin Magazine highlights its appeal as a refined, handcrafted decor piece. With its natural timbers, elegant composition and meticulous detail, it aligns beautifully with the magazine’s focus on inspiring design and artistic craftsmanship.
