Spurtle FAQ
What is a spurtle?
A spurtle is a traditional Scottish rod-shaped wooden kitchen utensil (dating back to 16th-century Scotland) designed to stir porridge smoothly and continuously without creating lumps or dragging mixture up the sides of the pot.
What is a spurtle used for besides porridge?
Its slender, rounded profile is ideal for stirring risotto, polenta, custard, scrambled eggs, thick soups, stews, and sauces, reaching right into the bottom corners of a saucepan without scratching non-stick, cast-iron, or enamelled cookware.
Why choose Huon Pine or Tasmanian Blackwood for a spurtle?
Tasmanian Huon Pine has a silky-smooth grain and natural preserving oil that resists moisture, while Tasmanian Blackwood offers rich golden-brown timber strength. Read our full guide, What Is a Spurtle?, or browse our Kitchen Utensils Collection.
How do I care for a wooden spurtle?
Rinse in warm soapy water immediately after use, dry with a towel, never soak or place in the dishwasher, and occasionally rub with food-safe Wood Butter or refined vegetable oil—see our Wood Care & Maintenance Guide.
