River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) is a dense Australian hardwood known for its deep red colour and weight. It grows along rivers and floodplains across much of mainland Australia, where access to groundwater and periodic flooding shapes both how the tree develops and how the timber behaves once cut and dried.

What Makes It Different

Red Gum is dense and heavy compared to many other timbers. That density gives it strength and durability, but also makes it harder to machine and slower to season properly.

The grain can be variable, particularly in burl sections where irregular growth produces complex patterns. These variations define how each finished piece looks rather than indicating a defect in the material.

How It Was Used

Red Gum was widely used where strength and durability were essential. Railway sleepers, fence posts, bridge timbers, and heavy structural components all relied on its ability to withstand load, impact, and long-term exposure.

What Changed

Harvesting of River Red Gum is now managed under state-based environmental controls, particularly within river systems such as the Murray–Darling Basin. Forest management is closely tied to water flow, flooding cycles, and the broader health of floodplain ecosystems.

This has influenced both the availability and form of the timber. Larger structural material is less common than it once was, and supply is more dependent on controlled harvesting and salvaged sources.

How It Is Used Now

Red Gum remains valued for its strength, but its use today often centres on smaller, finished objects where its density and colour can be appreciated without requiring large sections.

Items such as bookends, walking sticks, and turned pieces make practical use of shorter lengths and denser sections. These are objects that benefit from weight and durability, where the material contributes directly to how the piece performs in use.

Browse our range of River Red Gum pieces, including functional items made from reclaimed and carefully sourced timber.

Red Gum suits objects that are handled, weighted, or built to last. Its density, durability, and distinctive colour make it a material where the timber itself becomes part of how the finished piece is experienced.
