The Xylophone Drum is essentially a tongue drum which can be found in several ancient cultures around the world and are indigenous to areas including Central America, East and Southeast Asia and parts of Africa. The design and making of the tongue drums has evolved over the years from a basic hollow log with slits cut into it to the modern instrument with its vastly improved quality of sound. Techniques were developed to tune the drums which are now in an accurate pentatonic scale. The Xylophone drum is best played as a percussion rather than a melodic instrument and lends itself to intuitive play and creating patterns of notes and rhythms.
They are an excellent instrument for young children and adults will love the meditative quality of tootling around on one of these. They are tuned to the key of G but can be ordered in any key, for specialist uses, through our product enquiry box. The drums are made from Australian hardwood which is both durable and attractive and come with a pair of mallets or 'dongers' as we call them. Leave one of these on your coffee table and watch everyone from two to eighty have a play.
