Nicely packaged with 6 coasters to a box, these Banksia-nut coasters are quintessentially Australian and derive their name from Sir Joseph Banks, the English botanist who accompanied Captain Cook. Banyallah and Wallum are Aboriginal names for this plant whose many varieties are native and unique to Australia though many have made their way to botanic gardens all over the world where these unusual looking plants continue to fascinate. These coasters are made from Banksia Grandis, a very large Banksia that forms the understory of the Jarrah forests of Western Australia and whose seed-pods or nuts have a large, dense centre that makes them ideal for turning. In each set of coasters, you’ll find a combination of rough edge (the outside of the seed pod), holes where the seeds once were and a red velvety fur. Once turned, the coasters are finished with shellac and oil to enhance their natural colour.
Importantly, the Banksia seedpods used have expelled their seeds and completed their life-cycle while being harvested only by hand to minimise disturbance to the forest, giving them excellent green credentials. Being boxed, lightweight and unbreakable they make a perfect Australian gift that can be posted locally or overseas.
